There are three major differences between
expanded metal sheets and perforated metal sheets: their manufacturing process,
characteristics and typical end uses.
Difference
in Manufacturing Process
Expanded metal sheets are manufactured by
creating multiple slits in the sheet and then stretched to expand. These slits,
when expanded, create a beautiful diamond pattern in a chain-like series
throughout the sheet. This pattern strengthens the structure of the sheet, making
it highly durable. Also, this process does not create any waste and is,
therefore, cost-effective.
On the other hand, perforated metal sheets are
manufactured by punching or stamping holes into the metal. These stampings can
come in different shapes and designs as desired. However, the size of the holes
determines the amount of scrap that is removed from the sheet. The cost of
production increases with the volume of scrap produced.
Difference
in Characteristics
Expanded
Metal Sheet
·
Expanded metal sheet maintains
its structural integrity because there is no stress involved in its
manufacturing.
·
You can choose the thickness
and strand dimension, depending on the requirement of your design.
·
Being made of a single-piece
sheet, expanded metal sheet does not unravel.
·
It is a good conductor of heat
and electricity and can retain mechanical properties.
·
Expanded metal can be almost
transparent, depending on the opening.
Perforated
Metal Sheet
·
Perforated metal sheet is generally
made from steel metal.
·
It comes in an array of sizes,
gauges, hole shapes and material types.
·
Perforated metal sheet has a
boundary where holes are not punched. This adds stability to the sheet.
Difference
in Uses
Expanded
metal sheets are mostly used for:
·
steps
·
flooring in factories and on
construction rigging
·
fences
·
wash stations
·
security applications
Perforated
metal sheets are mostly used in:
·
Filters
·
Audio speaker covers
·
Tubing
·
Patio furniture
·
Vents
